Year 4 had lots of fun exploring our circuit resources this afternoon. We learnt what the different components were for a circuit and which circuits worked best and why.

Year 5 have been learning all about water resistance, streamlined objects and buoyancy. To help us to understand this we made paper boats, thinking carefully about their shape and how streamline they were and if they sunk why this happened.

Year 5 Manchester University Science Workshop, by Miss Jones

Today we went to Manchester University for a Science Workshop. We were lucky enough to be able to talk to lots of different people who work in the Science industry. We learnt all about DNA, stem cells and even about materials molecules. As part of this we tested different types of equipment like: 3D printers, Microscopes and even a new structure which tests the strength of materials (we tested chocolate). We also used a banana to make music and were able to have a device on our heads which moved when we thought happy thoughts. It was a lot of fun to learn about different aspects of science.

Year 5 visited the Art gallery in Manchester to have a look at the work of Picasso. In the afternoon, we then went and watched the Halle youth concert at the Bridgewater Hall.

Stained Glass Windows, by Miss Horvath

Year 4 have been looking closely at stained glass windows and how they can represent teachings from different religions. We looked in particular at the Christian Easter story and how we could represent it through the art of a stained glass window. We created our images and then to give them a WOW window effect we decided to laminate each design. 

Flashback narrative drama, by Miss Jones

Before starting our writing we used drama to help us get into character. We thought about the different parts of our story and how our character would feel during each part. We considered how they would feel during a flashback. We will use these ideas in our writing this week.

Year 5 have been learning about comparing and ordering fractions with different denominators. The children were all given a fraction and had to order themselves in ascending order .. they even had to convert some fractions so that they all had a common denominator!!

Darwin's theory of natural selection- investigation, by Miss Isbister

Year 6 researched Darwin's theory of natural selection and evolution then put it to the test by investigating his famous finch study. In groups, the children designed their own investigation using bird beak models and smarties or laces (seeds and worms). 

They produced a bar chart on the Chromebooks before analysing their data. 

Excellent Maths and Science Year 6!
